Building IRL communities - why, how and with what
From shared goals and resources to shared responsibility

From shared goals and resources to shared responsibility
Whether you are building or maintaining communities, there is a lot to tend: community health, tooling, finance, governance, stewardship, atmosphere, etc. This workshop invites you to take a step back from the daily practices to strategically work on deeper questions.
Elinor Ostrom won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2009 for her work on how communities self-organise to manage shared resources. Her work is built on years of research into hundreds of communities and how they distribute ownership, responsibilities, and resources over time.
Her thinking challenges the conventional beliefs of both the market and the state — proposing a third way based on trust, visibility, and collective governance. We will use the 8 principles of Ostrom as a lens for this day.
Topics we worked with
- •Who are you and what are you commoning (the 8 principles)
- •What roles are there in our community?
- •Who is (economically) sustaining our community?
- •How do we govern and make decisions?
- •How do we connect with other communities?
Who is this for?
Community builders, stewards, facilitators, and anyone who is holding or tending to a community — whether it's a neighbourhood initiative, a co-housing group, a cooperative, a movement, or a shared space.
